What is Spun Cotton?
Spun cotton ornaments oringinated in 19th century Germany. They were made by applying strips of spun cotton or batting around a hand made wire armature. They began as cottage industries and were later manufactured by companies.
Fruits, people and animals, some dipped in mica (fine glitter), hung from Christmas trees and were displayed on mantels. Finds from nature and around the house were added to each figure. By no means confined to the Christmas season, they appeared at each important celebration.
If you are fortunate, you may still find some in antique stores or on Ebay.
Here are a few of my whimsical Christmas moose.
