What is Spun Cotton?

Spun cotton ornaments oringinated in 19th century Germany.  They were made by applying strips of spun cotton around a hand made wire armature.  They began as cottage industries and were later manufactured by companies.

Fruits, people and animals, some dipped in mica (fine glitter), hung from Christmas trees and were displayed on mantels.  Finds from nature and around the house were added to each figure.  Crepe paper was also used. By no means confined to holidays, they appeared at each important celebration.
